Are you geeky enough?

While growing up I had geeky interests and the result of that was never fitting in. This fact was compounded by the fact that I moved every year like clock work. This meant any chance of making long lasting friends became quite hard. Not having the social network of fellow geeks to lean on I discovered that even though I was moving a lot I could take my support with me. Things like my comics and fantasy books were always with me and helped me get through rough times. I remember racing home after school to watch Star Trek the original series with my Dad. These are some of the good memories from my youth.

The job I have now is very sports orientated and as such I still get slack from co-workers about being a geek. I remember at a meeting we had a trivia question about LOTR and I was the only one who knew the answer. Well I got ribbed for watching the movie to often but when they found out I knew the answer from reading the book some of them didn’t understand why I would actually read for fun. I did find some common ground due to The Big Bang Theory. Soon a couple of people where wearing shirts that Sheldon wears on the show such as Flash or Green Lantern shirts. My first reaction was to quiz them. (Do you know the name of those characters? What is their real name? How did they get their powers?) I realized there was no point to these questions. I love these characters why start hating on people who are only starting to discover them now.

Challenging someones geekiness level is only a way to make one feel superior to others. This has less to do with what you feel about the other person and more to do with how you feel about yourself. I welcome anyone into my sandbox letting other people play with us isn’t going to take anything away from our enjoyment. In fact it with the added diversity to our ranks things might just get better.

As far as certain people faking geek cred for personal gains. Let them live their lives in the way they see fit. Personally I have friends that are geeks and some that aren’t. I am not going to start following someone on twitter or anything just because they claim to be a geek. They have to be interesting and the type of person I could see myself chatting with if we were at the same party.

Looking forward to my first trip to SDCC, and attending SDCC Panel: Oh, You Sexy Geek!
